Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) are self – operating machines that are designed to transport materials for certain companies in the industrial goods sector. Used in factories, warehouses and distribution centres, they stick to set routes, which helps boost efficiency, cut down on manual work and make material handling safer.
These AGVs are all about pulling carts or trailers filled with materials, this takes the work load off of people who work in manual labour and the AGVs move large amounts over longer distances.
These vehicles are made to carry single loads like pallets or containers, and come with decks or conveyors that make loading and unloading much more easier.
Just like regular forklifts, these AGVs can lift and carry palletized items, boosting safety and efficiency in handling materials.
Commonly found in manufacturing, Assembly Line Vehicles are an essential piece of machinery in modern manufacturing environments, playing a crucial part in enhancing productivity and operational efficiency. These AGVs are created to transport materials, components, and finalised products through to different stages of the assembly process. By automating the movement of goods, ALVs help to minimise manual labour, reduce the risk of human error, and optimise workflow.

AGV batteries are revolutionising the future in industries by improving efficiency in material handling and transport jobs. A key factor in how well they work and how reliable they have become to the world lies in the battery technology that fuels them. Getting to know the different battery types is crucial for getting the best performance out of AGVs. Here are some different types.
These batteries are the historic option for AGVs because they’re affordable and are made to be durable. They can manage high discharge rates and work well in tough temperature conditions, but they do have their drawbacks. Their heavy weight can limit an AGV’s payload capacity and efficiency. Plus, their battery life usually lasts about 500 to 1,000 charge cycles, and this means they’ll need to be replaced more often than lithium batteries. They’re also not very environmentally friendly, since they contain the harmful materials lead and sulphuric acid which can lead to environmental disposal issues.
This type of battery nowadays is the most popular option when it comes to AGVs. They pack more energy per volume, which means they can run longer, and they’re comparatively lightweight, making AGVs more nimble and simpler to use. Plus, these batteries have a very good charge cycle life, often going beyond 2,000 charges. They also are lower maintenance than other battery types. These batteries are often chosen for environmental reasons, since they don’t have the harmful substances that lead-acid batteries do.
Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries are a viable option for powering AGVs, offering a balance of performance, cost and environmental friendliness. They provide better energy density than lead-acid batteries and are relatively maintenance-free, but are more expensive. However, they are generally outperformed by lithium-ion batteries in terms of energy density, longevity and efficiency.
